Bringing rich intensity to Ardbeg’s smoky balance

This perfumed, spicy and savoury single malt is the indulgent result of a rare exploration of Marsala wine casks.

Distilled on 2nd March 2011, this spirit was laid down in select Marsala casks sourced from Sicily to discover the deeply sweet flavours that fortified wine barrels might bring to Ardbeg’s usual smoky, balanced style. Many of those first-fill casks would one day be enjoyed in Ardbeg Dolce – our Ardbeg Day 2026 Limited Edition release, but Cask No.506 brings its own singular character.

Released to celebrate Bryony McNiven’s appointment as Distillery Manager – and also Ardbeg Committee Co-Chair – this 14 Year Old whisky balances aromas of cigar smoke, and rose petals with tastes of fruit cake, baking spices and smoked meats, in an Ardbeg of extraordinarily rich intensity.

Perfumed, spicy and savoury

Intensely smoky, with notes of charred embers and cigar smoke entwined with hand-rolled tobacco and leather. A rich, fruity undercurrent soon emerges, brimming with orange zest, poached apricot, and spiced fig compote – tinged with the sweet depth of molasses and dark Muscovado sugar. A little water releases more perfumed tones of rose petals, sandalwood and incense, with wisps of peat smoke ever-present.
A powerful and mouth-coating mix of sweet, savoury and smoky flavours. Notes of fruit cake bursting with candied orange, dates and raisins, are laced with clove, cinnamon and star anise. Rich layers of dark chocolate, walnut and treacle toffee follow on, balanced by smoked meats, capers and roasted chestnuts. A persistently earthy curl of smoke leads into a peppery, chilli-tinged heat.
Long and complex. Chewy peat oils and hints of ash are threaded with tobacco leaf and maple-smoked wood. Finally, comes the lingering sweetness of honeycomb and marmalade.
