Ardbeg Traigh Bhan
19 years old
NOT TO BE MIST
Produced in small batches to be released every year, this exceptionally rare and ever-changing 19 year old draws its inspiration from Islay’s Traigh Bhan beach, known locally as the Singing Sands.
Ardbeg Traigh Bhan Batch 2 is the second release in this exclusive 19 year old series. Following in the footsteps of the much lauded first batch, this whisky is a slight variation on the last.
The first batch of Traigh Bhan certainly went down a storm, and that’s probably because it was bottled in one. But this year, Batch 2 was bottled in a haar*. With subtle changes in the batch recipe, this rare whisky is an opportunity not to be mist...
*‘Haar’ is the Scots Gaelic word for ‘a thick coastal fog/mist’

“BATCH 2 BALANCES THE COMPLEX WITH THE CLASSIC – THIS IS THE EPITOME OF AN AGED ARDBEG.”
– DR BILL LUMSDEN
Ardbeg’s Head Whisky Creator, Dr Bill Lumsden, and Head of Maturing Whisky Stocks, Brendan McCarron, joined to discuss the finer details of Batch 2 and compare notes on what makes this bottling different from Batch 1.
In a rare occurrence for Ardbeg, this aged whisky will be released every year and each one of these exclusive, small batch bottlings will feature a unique batch code.
Every bottling of Ardbeg Traigh Bhan will have its own batch symbol. Inspired by various distinguishing features around the Distillery, batch codes will change with each release. For Ardbeggians who have made the pilgrimage to Islay, you may recognise where we got our inspiration...

the batch code... decoded
TB – Traigh Bhan, the beach known locally as the Singing Sands and the place that inspired this bottling.
02 – The batch number. With this number, you can identify each release of Traigh Bhan.
18.09.00 – The date indicating the age of the youngest spirit distilled each year. The year the millennium bug threatened computer systems around the world, thankfully on the Isle of Islay we were unaffected...
JT – The initials of a Distillery member who helped create the bottling for that year. This year’s bottling features our Distillery Visitor Centre Manager, Jackie Thomson.
With subtle changes in the batch recipe annually, Ardbeg fans will enjoy exploring the finer details of this transformational whisky every time it comes around. This means that each bottle of Ardbeg Traigh Bhan is special, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.
CASK SELECTION, A DELICATE BALANCING ACT
Each batch of Traigh Bhan will be a slight variation on the last. This is due to minor changes in the cask selection. The main difference with Batch 2 is that it was created using a slightly higher proportion of 1st-fill Bourbon to refill casks, and a similar level of Sherry casks. These imbue it with an altogether more silky-smooth character.
COAXED BY THE CURRENT
In Ardbeg Traigh Bhan Batch 2, faint waves of sweet wood smoke and tart crème fraîche lap gently over bold notes of savoury fennel, celeriac and roasted tea leaves. A splash of water releases a gust of fresh seaspray, followed by irresistible aromas of leather, eucalyptus oil and pine.
A HEAVENLY VISTA
From the Ardbeg Distillery to Port Ellen and beyond, follow the rocky coast and you will discover the heavenly vista of Traigh Bhan (pronounced tri-van). This captivating beach has soft white sands that sing beneath your feet, and a spellbinding hum that ebbs and flows with the winds and tides.
But beguiling as this place is, do not drop your guard. Bathing here is ill advised in the seemingly tame crystal waters where jagged, volcanic rocks pierce the sands along the shore.
The essence of Traigh Bhan is captured in this exquisite bottling. Like so many Ardbegs, it’s an iconic Islay location that has given birth to another iconic Islay dram.
the ardbeg committee
When Ardbeg Traigh Bhan began on its peaty path to maturity in the year 2000, the Ardbeg Committee was only a few months old. Back then, we at the Distillery knew all of our Committee Members by name. We’d even receive regular faxes from some of them!
Twenty years on, while times have changed, the Committee remains – albeit with a few thousand more members…
To find out about the next Ardbeg Traigh Bhan release you'll need to be part of the Committee. So if you’re not already a member, what are you waiting for?Join the committee
